Madelaine Hillyard is a world-famous heart surgeon at the top of her game. Her personal life is far less successful. A loving but overworked single mom, she is constantly at odds with her teenage daughter. At sixteen, Lina is confused, angry, and fast becoming a stranger to her mother—a rebel desperate to find the father who walked away before she was born. Complicating matters for Madelaine are the vastly different DeMarco brothers: While priest Francis DeMarco is always ready to lend a helping hand, his brother, Angel, long ago took on the role of bad boy. Years earlier Angel abandoned Madelaine—and fatherhood—to go in search of fame and fortune. His departure left Madelaine devastated, but now he reappears and seeks help from the very people he betrayed—as a patient in dire need. With Home Again, New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah has written a moving, powerful novel about the fragile threads that bind together our lives and the astonishing possibility of second chances.

Title: Hill Women Pdf Finding Family and a Way Forward in the Appalachian Mountains
Author: Cassie Chambers
Published Date: 2020
Page: 304

“Cassie Chambers’s intimate portrait of the lives of rural mountain women will complicate everything you think you know about Appalachia. From their quiet stoicism to their often overlooked fortitude, Chambers’s characters—herself included—are cobbled from grit, empathy, strength, intellect, and hope. Their tenuous belief in a system that sometimes protects them and sometimes betrays them offers a nuanced and necessary feminist perspective often lacking in our national conversations. Chambers picks up where Sarah Smarsh ended, with a beautiful, authentic, and honest portrayal. This is a stunning and expansive book, and it will stay and stay with you, as it has me.”—Rachel Louise Snyder, author of No Visible Bruises   “Cassie Chambers tells the story of the women in the mountains of Kentucky who nurtured her, as well as her own journey to become a fierce defender of Appalachian women. This is a book that teaches us about service and gratitude, family and the tenuousness of belonging, and the power of education, loyalty, and home.”—Steven Stoll, author of Ramp Hollow   “A fascinating view of an often misunderstood population of America and an uplifting ode to the strong women at its core, whose unique stories and sacrifices inspire . . . a book to be celebrated!”—Cea Sunrise Person, author of North of Normal   “Women in Kentucky’s Appalachian community come into focus in lawyer Chambers’s powerful debut memoir, which aims to put a human face on a stereotyped region. . . . This is a passionate memoir, one that honors Appalachia’s residents.”—Publishers Weekly   “A family memoir that celebrates the inspiration of strong women within a rural culture most often characterized as patriarchal . . . [Chambers tells] stories that illuminate the hardworking spirit and flashes of hope among the populace, the women in particular.”—Kirkus ReviewsCassie Chambers grew up in eastern Kentucky. She graduated from Yale College, the Yale School of Public Health, the London School of Economics, and Harvard Law School, where she was president of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, a student-run law firm that represents low-income clients. Chambers then received a Skadden Fellowship to return to Kentucky to do legal work with domestic violence survivors in rural communities. In 2018, she helped pass Jeanette’s Law, which eliminated the requirement that domestic violence survivors pay an incarcerated spouse’s legal fees in order to get a divorce. She lives in Louisville with her husband and their son. After rising from poverty to earn two Ivy League degrees, an Appalachian lawyer pays tribute to the strong “hill women” who raised and inspired her, and whose values have the potential to rejuvenate a struggling region—an uplifting and eye-opening memoir for readers of Hillbilly Elegy and Educated. Nestled in the Appalachian mountains, Owsley County is one of the poorest counties in both Kentucky and the country. Buildings are crumbling and fields sit vacant, as tobacco farming and coal mining decline. But strong women are finding creative ways to subsist in their hollers in the hills. Cassie Chambers grew up in these hollers and, through the women who raised her, she traces her own path out of and back into the Kentucky mountains. Chambers’s Granny was a child bride who rose before dawn every morning to raise seven children. Despite her poverty, she wouldn’t hesitate to give the last bite of pie or vegetables from her garden to a struggling neighbor. Her two daughters took very different paths: strong-willed Ruth—the hardest-working tobacco farmer in the county—stayed on the family farm, while spirited Wilma—the sixth child—became the first in the family to graduate from high school, then moved an hour away for college. Married at nineteen and pregnant with Cassie a few months later, Wilma beat the odds to finish school. She raised her daughter to think she could move mountains, like the ones that kept her safe but also isolated her from the larger world. Cassie would spend much of her childhood with Granny and Ruth in the hills of Owsley County, both while Wilma was in college and after. With her “hill women” values guiding her, Cassie went on to graduate from Harvard Law. But while the Ivy League gave her knowledge and opportunities, its privileged world felt far from her reality, and she moved back home to help her fellow rural Kentucky women by providing free legal services. Appalachian women face issues that are all too common: domestic violence, the opioid crisis, a world that seems more divided by the day. But they are also community leaders, keeping their towns together in the face of a system that continually fails them. With nuance and heart, Chambers uses these women’s stories paired with her own journey to break down the myth of the hillbilly and illuminate a region whose poor communities, especially women, can lead it into the future.

An Inspring Memoir of Life in Appalacia - Past and Present ”This holler feels like home, and this house feels like family. There are women’s stories here, stories of resilience, love, and strength. This community knows them well, but their echo hasn’t reached far enough into the outside world. Instead, these tales have ricocheted within the mountains, growing more faint with time. I want to tell these stories because they matter, because I’m afraid that they will be forgotten, because they have the power to make this community visible. As I stop my vehicle and walk toward the house, the memories wash over me like the sunlight on the mountain hills.”Chambers returned to Owsley County, Kentucky – one of the poorest counties in the state as well as the U.S. - after being one of the few young women raised there who pursued an education after high school, her mother before her setting the example and encouraging her to pursue her dreams of experiencing life beyond these hills.”I don’t have enough ways to honor them, these women of the Appalachian hills. Women who built a support system for me and for others. The best way I know is to tell their stories.”A memoir of growing up in poverty, of the women who inspired her to reach for her dreams, to believe in her self-worth enough to graduate from Yale and Harvard Law, and has helped others along the way. She also includes her personal struggles to accept how each place had become a part of her, giving her unique perspectives that benefitted the people she has helped, perhaps more importantly these women struggling against the laws established in this very patriarchal culture that includes additional deterrents for women in particular: domestic violence and poverty, along with laws that have failed not only to protect them, but has penalized those seeking protection. My father grew up in the hollers of West Virginia, and was lucky enough to recognize his desire to become a pilot at a very young age, and luckier still that his dream not only came true, but that he made a difference in airline safety, his passion. I’ve visited the small town where he grew up, met some of the people who were his friends, and been charmed and moved by the honest generosity of those I met, but it is still easy to see the depth of poverty that exists there, and the limitations it can present.A nicely balanced glimpse at the lives of these Hill Women that offers insight into the struggles and problems unique to these communities while recognizing and appreciating the positive sides of their sense of community, as well. An inspiring read. Many thanks for the ARC provided by Random House Publishing Group – Ballantine / Ballantine Books

Endurance Pdf

Title: Endurance Pdf Shackleton's Incredible Voyage

"One of the most gripping, suspenseful, intense stories anyone will ever read."―Chicago Tribune"Riveting."―The New York Times"Without a doubt this painstakingly written authentic adventure story will rank as one of the classic tales of the heroic age of exploration."―Christian Science Monitor"Grit in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity."―Wall Street Journal"[An] incomparable telling of Shackleton's travails."―Mary Roach, New York Times Book Review Alfred Lansing (1921-1975) was a native of Chicago. After serving more than five years in the Navy, he enrolled at Northwestern University, where he studied journalism. Until 1949 he edited a weekly newspaper in Illinois, later joined the United Press, and eventually became a freelance writer.

The harrowing tale of British explorer Ernest Shackleton's 1914 attempt to reach the South Pole, one of the greatest adventure stories of the modern age.

In August 1914, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton boarded the Endurance and set sail for Antarctica, where he planned to cross the last uncharted continent on foot. In January 1915, after battling its way through a thousand miles of pack ice and only a day's sail short of its destination, the Endurance became locked in an island of ice. Thus began the legendary ordeal of Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven men.

For ten months the ice-moored Endurance drifted northwest before it was finally crushed between two ice floes. With no options left, Shackleton and a skeleton crew attempted a near-impossible journey over 850 miles of the South Atlantic's heaviest seas to the closest outpost of civilization. Their survival, and the survival of the men they left behind, depended on their small lifeboat successfully finding the island of South Georgia--a tiny dot of land in a vast and hostile ocean.

In Endurance, the definitive account of Ernest Shackleton's fateful trip, Alfred Lansing brilliantly narrates the harrowing and miraculous voyage that has defined heroism for the modern age.

Wrong Format I do not want to say anything that might diminish this incredible story or the heroism of all the men involved. But, this should have been a short story and not a full blown novel. There is not one moment of levity in the entire book. It is simply tension at a high level for page after page after page. There is only so much snow, ice, freezing water, freezing temperatures, waves, ice pack, ice pressure, wind, hopeless, etc., etc., etc. that a person can take. After a while it all becomes somewhat of a blur and is boring, especially when you know how the story ends. I only wanted to finish the book and move on to something more interesting. If that kind of book is what you are looking for, then you will love this book. It really is an incredible story and it is a story well told.Have you ever had a horrible nightmare from which you thought you wouldn’t be awakened ... Have you ever had a horrible nightmare from which you thought you wouldn’t be awakened from? A nightmare so bad that you felt deep consternation even after waking up from it. Quite glad did you become when realization came to you that it was just a dream - now you were in your warm bed, and you are safe. This book is the story of Ernest Shackleton and his 27 men. The difference between your nightmare and theirs is that there was no awakening for them- theirs was real. They lost their ship during Antarctic expedition, named "Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition."Before the expedition, Shackleton named the ship "Endurance" from his family motto, "Fortitudine vincimus" (By endurance we conquer). Very interesting is it to know the crew survived between the wreckage of their ship, Endurance, and their rescue only though tough endurance, so shows their story from this book. The author of this book, Alfred Lansing, was a journalist all his life. He has done a great job at compiling official sail records, each crew's journal, background world’s history, personal interviews, ship's manufacture features, and all the information relevant to Endurance and expedition. Through this book will you gain many new perspectives in respect to this expedition, if you already knew their story. If you didn’t know about them, while reading this book, you will feel as though you are their stowaway crew member, having survived along with them on their unexpected 17-month-long journey and be awed at how so did theyAt times, I slowed down and carefully read with wrinkles between my eyes with much concern for the crew members' well-being. I was worried something horrific might come upon the crew when they run out of food, water; some fell off the boat; many had frostbite; and one had gangrene on his toes from severe frostbite. At other times, I burst out laughing loudly at funny jokes that they made each other, and positive mindset, despite their grim ordeal.Shackleton's leadership could be a matter of interest to you. He showed countless courageous leadership decisions and sacrifices for his crew throughout the journey. Had it not been for his innate leadership, I am certain the rest of 27 men would not have seen their family ever again. On voyage, they would toast by saying "For our wives and children. May they never meet." Then did they not have a slightest inkling on how Shackleton would lead them from the grasp of death in the coming months.A Riveting True Story of Adventure, Survival and Hope In 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton set out on an expedition to make the first land crossing of the barren Antarctic continent from the east to the west coast. The expedition failed to accomplish its objective, but became recognized instead as an amazing feat of endurance. Shackleton and a crew of 27 (plus one stowaway) first headed to the Weddell Sea on the ship Endurance. Their ship was trapped by pack ice short of their destination and eventually crushed. Forced to abandon ship, the men were trapped on ice floes for months while they drifted north. Once they were far enough north that the ice thinned somewhat, they were forced to journey in lifeboats they'd dragged off the ship. After six terrible days, they made it to uninhabited Elephant Island; from there Shackleton and five other men set off in an open 22-foot boat on an incredible 800-mile voyage across the notoriously tempestuous Drake Passage to South Georgia Island, where they hiked across the island’s mountain range to reach a whaling camp. From there, they returned in a ship to rescue the men left behind on Elephant Island. That these men were able to survive in the harsh, barren conditions of Antarctica, where temperatures frequently fell below zero is amazing. It’s nearly unimaginable that these men could survive for almost two years, their lives marked by a seemingly endless stretch of misery, suffering, and boredom, not to mention the threat of starvation. At every turn, their situation seems to go from bad to worse. If this were a work of fiction, one would be inclined to claim the story was simply too far-fetched. But Endurance isn't just a tale of misery, it is a vivid description of their journey, the dangers they faced, and the obstacles they overcame. Through all of this, Shackleton has never lost a man.Alfred Lansing's book, written in 1958 from interviews and journals of the survivors, is now back in print. It’s a riveting tale of adventure, survival and hope. It is also a rare historical, non-fiction book that is as exciting as any novel. I’ve read a number of stories of survival and would rate this as the best of all I have read. This is one of the great adventure stories of our time. Don’t miss it.

Title: Memories of Tomorrow Pdf Nameless, Book 6

What strange science made Nameless who he is? What catastrophes have been erased from his memories? And what foreboding visions plaguing him are about to be realized?

In Indiana, a murderous psycho has kidnapped his own six-year-old stepson, Jamie, and secreted him away in a subterranean cave. It's become their bunker. For Nameless, the case is breaking down his defenses, and it may force him to face his memories. As his dark past comes flooding back, how much does he really want to know?

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz comes Memories of Tomorrow, part of Nameless, a riveting collection of short stories about a vigilante nomad, stripped of his memories and commissioned to kill. Follow him in each story, which can be read or listened to in a single sitting.

Wow is not a big enough word A fully satisfying conclusion to an extraordinary compilation of stories each detailing the carrying out of truth (or is it karma) to particularly evil people. I especially like the vision of this as a hopeful reality. Again, I clap my hands energetically at Mr Koontz’ brilliant imagination and creative writing.Probably my favorite of this series Sigh. That's what I did when I got to the last part of this novella. Because the truth can be an overwhelming burden, especially to one who chooses to bring truth to the monsters he pursues.I read through this entire series in two days, and only took that long because I had other things to do.I like Nameless almost as much as Odd Thomas. The character is built in such a way that I rooted for him, and hoped for something so bizarre, miraculous and out of the ordinary to happen to make this ending a good one for him, for his life to be 'righted' as Dean Koontz has done for so many other characters.I look forward to the stories yet to come for Nameless. I hope, that in time, he gets to face the adversary he deserves to encounter. He did it again Dean Koontz once again proves what a great writer he is. This story was short but kept me reading from page one to the end without stopping. It wasnt until the end that you were shown the thrilling climax. So many stories you can easily figure out this one had me crying but also saying wow didnt see that coming. Read this book

New York Times best-selling author presents a radical alternative to psychotropic meds: discerning the meaning in your symptoms and your struggle as a way to reclaim your health and your self.

For years, we've been telling ourselves that our difficult feelings-sadness, rage, shame, intensity, worry-are somehow "not okay." And, all too often, we've relied on the promise of pharmaceuticals to tamp them down. The fact is, though, that these feelings are a vital part of our experience. They are real. And those of us who feel them most strongly are the canaries in the coalmine-sensitive to things that are seriously wrong in the world today.
In a book that's both provocative and promising, holistic psychiatrist Kelly Brogan, M.D., author of A Mind of Your Own, shows us that we don't have to medicate our mental, emotional, and physical pain away-that the best way out is through. She explodes the mistaken belief that our symptoms-from mood changes to irritability to fogginess and fatigue-are evidence that we are sick or broken. Then she charts a new path to get real, get well, and get free. The journey includes:
  •  Coming to a new appreciation of the meaning behind symptoms, and whether you are a canary in the coal mine
  •  Learning the 2 major risks of medication that most doctors are not trained to disclose
  •  Exploring the 5 reversible physical drivers of so-called mental illness
  •  Starting the process of radical physical healing with inclusive details of Dr. Brogan's history-making 30-day protocol
  •  Taking an emotional inventory of energy drains and toxic relationships
  •  Taking a deeper dive into the spiritual awakening and expansion that comes when you reclaim your real self from conventional medicine
  •  Identifying the most likely places you have given your power away
  •  Understanding what the science has to say about psychedelics as a tool for awakening
  •  Navigating health challenges with curiosity and the proper tools
  •  Guidance, support, and many Travel Tips shared from the trenches!
Our experiences, Dr. Brogan argues, aren't problems or pathologies; they reflect what we need to accept, acknowledge, and transform in order to truly become who we are. Own Your Self is a journey of healing, and also something more: a journey of coming home to ourselves.

This book is life changing I wept when I finished this book. Sobbed and shed pain I had carried for a lifetime. I spent 10 years in the mental health system and finally got out, but carried around with me the story that "I am bad." I am sick, I am wrong, I can't figure it out, I don't know the way. It is a victim story that comes from a life of victimization. But now I am almost 40, why am I lugging that around? How do I get out of that prison and feel alive? How do I embody this power? This is the manual. And what I find most beautiful is that Dr. Brogan is a psychiatrist speaking from the "we." How do WE wake up, together. If I am not in fact sick, bad or wrong, how do I break the chains of that story and the patterning that I am currently living out? And, even bigger, if the parts of me that I called sick and bad are actually the beauty that leads to the healing of the world, how can WE support them in coming forward so that we all can stand in joy? Those are the questions that she speaks to with such eloquence and love. And what I know now is that my shame was always, and will always be, my greatest light. And I am the one with the power to bring that out of the closet into celebration.Radical Healing Dr. Brogan, herself a psychiatrist, delved into the research and concluded that there's not a single valid study showing that depression is due to a chemical imbalance. Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, and a wide array of other so-called psychiatric "conditions" can instead be viewed as symptoms of nutritional sensitivities or deficiencies, toxic exposure, thyroid imbalance, trauma and self-defeating beliefs. In this book she puts forth a radical message: that the standard pharmaceutical-based approach to healing is actually harming patients, not healing them. It is her deeply held and well-researched belief that these problems and many more are entirely treatable with lifestyle medicine. Dr. Brogan describes in detail what that means in terms that make it available to everyone. This book is an invitation to take control of your health. Potentially life-changing and life-saving for many people."I no longer think of myself as a doctor." I'm sure many of you believe in Kelly Brogan, as I once did. She's gorgeous, successful, and persuasive. I have all three of her books; she got me meditating over a year ago.I thought I'd just share some of my highlights from it and let you make up your own mind whether you want to go all-in on what she's currently selling. (And she is constantly selling. Plugs for her previous books and especially for her $300 Vital Mind Reset online course saturate the book.)The word "healing" appears 244 times in the book, whereas "cure" appears 6 times."Kundalini" appears 43 times."Quantum" appears 25 times. The term "morphic resonance" appears 9 times. In her own words:"It has never actually been proven that germs travel from one person to another and infect them.""We have been conditioned to look upon the tender topic of suicide with horror.""Acknowledge that your desire to commit suicide is part of your experience of self-healing and transformation.""When you are in [suicidal] crisis... Avoid people who... might resort to reflexive interventions like recruiting the authorities, even if they are your most dearly loved ones.""I couldn't remember the last time a woman completed her tapering work with me and still had her primary romantic relationship--namely, marital partnership--intact.""I calculated that I have an astronomical divorce rate from start to finish of the taper and transformation process."I hope we can agree that there's some serious red flags there.I give it three stars because I learned a few things and she's right about so much. Chapter 2 is particularly valuable. For another psychiatrist that shares a similar dietary approach but without all the woo-woo, Dr. Georgia Ede is excellent.
