As a pre-service science teacher you wonder where you're really going to be able to fit literacy into your classroom because there is just so much content to go over but this book simplifies everything and makes lesson planning easy. The strategies and resources provided in this book seem to be limitless. I honestly wish I had purchased this book rather than renting it for my class because I foresee myself utilizing it in my classroom. As a pre-service science teacher you wonder where you're really going to be able to fit literacy into your classroom because there is just so much content to go over but this book simplifies everything and makes lesson planning easy.Good book on philosophy/theory of perception and realism Having perused the book it seems and excellent work of scholarship, analyzing ideas primarily of Gibson but also of James and others in the gestalt theory, phenomenology, functionalist and related schools about perception, consciousness and its objects. The main idea is that or realism.Such important ideas Great book

Sober Curious Free Pdf

ISBN: B07KFMBMSF
Title: Sober Curious Pdf The Blissful Sleep, Greater Focus, Limitless Presence, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol

Would life be better without alcohol?

It's the nagging question more and more of us are finding harder to ignore, whether we have a "problem" with alcohol or not. After all, we yoga. We green juice. We meditate. We self-care. And yet, come the end of a long workday, the start of a weekend, an awkward social situation, we drink. One glass of wine turns into two turns into a bottle. In the face of how we care for ourselves otherwise, it's hard to avoid how alcohol really makes us feel: terrible

How different would our lives be if we stopped drinking on autopilot? If we stopped drinking altogether? Really different, it turns out. Really better. Frank, funny, and always judgment-free, Sober Curious is a bold guide to choosing to live hangover-free, from Ruby Warrington, one of the leading voices of the new sobriety movement.

Drawing on research, expert interviews, and personal narrative, Sober Curious is a radical takedown of the myths that keep so many of us drinking. Inspiring, timely, and blame-free, Sober Curious is both conversation starter and handbook - essential information that empowers listeners to transform their relationship with alcohol so we can lead our most fulfilling lives.

A funny and sensible guide without the self-flagellation What a guide. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's questioned/questioning/curious about their relationship with alcohol, whether it be in a sober moment realizing you can feel utterly grateful to be alive without outside influence or in the throes of a 48-72 hour hangover full of tears and existential crises (I didn't recognize I suffered that second part consciously until Ruby spelled it out). I found myself reflected throughout this book, sometimes in shocking and hilarious parallel, and it helps in recognizing just how connected and relatable we are to every other human in both triumph & joy and in our darker emotions and experiences. Ruby writes from compassionate place of common experience and comes across as a friend.Ruby thoughtfully explores and shares data woven into a nakedly honest narrative with gentle humor and lack of judgment. She carefully examines every aspect of the human existence, especially in how we socialize, and the possible differences in how we might experience each without alcohol, acknowledging the moments where we might use alcohol to assist or protect ourselves, and where we might not be realizing how it can contribute to greater harm, adverse results, and dulled clarity, both in our lives and in our collective consciousness. This book is full of guidance without being dogmatic, and while some of the subject matter can weigh heavy on the mind in prompting stark reflection, I find it balanced with plenty of opportunities for smiles and giggles. As a fellow privileged white, cis-gendered, able-bodied female, I appreciate her consistent acknowledgement of how our daily existence differs from the systemically oppressed and marginalized in our society and lacking the daily prejudices and violence BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) face. This is awareness I've committed to growing in myself, and she discusses how becoming sober curious can enable those interested in the same to step outside of ourselves and have more energy to act and uplift those who don't benefit from the privileges I know I possess without earning. Comfort and safety look difference from each perspective, but through incorporating insight from thought leaders and healers from all communities, she seeks to illustrate the benefits and provide guidance to free resources so that any human might benefit from this exploration, through better sleep, more balanced emotional responses/management, more energy, and beyond. I personally am experiencing an awakening to my own power and the control I do possess, however more easily I might be able to wield it than others. In previous attempts to moderate or take extended breaks from drinking, I found I was full of disbelief and an aching to return to my previous consumption patterns at the end of each stint. This time feels different, not only because I spent December examining and questioning my behaviors in the face of being laid off due to company financial troubles, returning to college, and the amount of hustle and clarity my life will require for survival, but because Sober Curious helps me take a softer approach and focus on what's being added to my life--not the deprivation mindset I used so many times before. I hope those who pick this book up find comfort and shared humor in the journey, even if that journey is just absorbing this knowledge before/without practically applying it to life. I know it's helping me in several ways, and for Ruby and her work, I'm forever grateful. It Can Possibly Change Your Life Coincidentally I purchased this book while starting "Dry January" and let's just say this book is motivating me to go way BEYOND dry January. So many outlooks and facts about alcohol I have never known. I have recommended this book to countless people and given many new outlooks to those who could use them. Oh, and I finished in three days. A must!!! What a great author - now seeing what else she might have in store.Your choice - Get curious or get loaded. So much information, but not intimidating or lecturing. Choices abound here on how to handle your own alcohol profile. This seems to be a breakthrough concept. Don’t be afraid to be “curious.”

Title: The Whole-Brain Child Pdf 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind
Author: Daniel J. Siegel, M.D.
Published Date: 2012
Page: 176

Advance praise for The Whole-Brain Child“Siegel and Bryson reveal that an integrated brain with parts that cooperate in a coordinated and balanced manner creates a better understanding of self, stronger relationships, and success in school, among other benefits. With illustrations, charts, and even a handy ‘Refrigerator Sheet,’ the authors have made every effort to make brain science parent-friendly.”—Publishers Weekly “Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson have created a masterful, reader-friendly guide to helping children grow their emotional intelligence. This brilliant method transforms everyday interactions into valuable brain-shaping moments. Anyone who cares for children—or who loves a child—should read The Whole-Brain Child.”—Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence “Fears? Fights? Frustrations? Help is here! Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson turn leading brain science into simple, smart—and effective—solutions to your child's struggles.”—Harvey Karp, M.D., bestselling author of The Happiest Baby on the Block and The Happiest Toddler on the Block “This erudite, tender, and funny book is filled with fresh ideas based on the latest neuroscience research. I urge all parents who want kind, happy, and emotionally healthy kids to read The Whole-Brain Child. I wish I had read it when my kids were young, but no one knew then what Siegel and Bryson share with us in an immensely practical way. This is my new baby gift.”—Mary Pipher, Ph.D., author of Reviving Ophelia and The Shelter of Each Other “The Whole-Brain Child is chock-full of strategies for raising happy, resilient children. It offers powerful tools for helping children develop the emotional intelligence they will need to be successful in the world. Parents will learn ways to feel more connected to their children and more satisfied in their role as a parent. Most of all, The Whole-Brain Child helps parents teach kids about how their brain actually works, giving even very young children the self-understanding that can lead them to make good choices and, ultimately, to lead meaningful and joyful lives.”—Christine Carter, Ph.D., author of Raising Happiness “In their dynamic and readable new book, Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson sweep aside the old models of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ parenting to offer a scientific focus: the impact of parenting on brain development. Parents will certainly recognize themselves in the lively ‘aha’ anecdotes that fill these pages. More important, they will see how everyday empathy and insight can help a child to integrate his or her experience and develop a more resilient brain.”—Michael Thompson, Ph.D., co-author of the bestselling Raising Cain Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., is clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, the founding co-director of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center, and executive director of the Mindsight Institute. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Dr. Siegel is the author of several books, including the New York Times bestsellers Brainstorm, Mind, and, with Tina Payne Bryson, The Whole-Brain Child and No-Drama Discipline. He is also the author of the bestsellers Mindsight and, with Mary Hartzell, Parenting from the Inside Out. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, with welcome visits from their adult son and daughter.Tina Payne Bryson, Ph.D., is a pediatric and adolescent psychotherapist, parenting consultant, and the director of parenting education and development for the Mindsight Institute. A frequent lecturer to parents, educators, and professionals, she lives near Los Angeles with her husband and three children.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The authors of No-Drama Discipline and The Yes Brain explain the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures in this pioneering, practical book.

“Simple, smart, and effective solutions to your child’s struggles.”—Harvey Karp, M.D.

In this pioneering, practical book, Daniel J. Siegel, neuropsychiatrist and author of the bestselling Mindsight, and parenting expert Tina Payne Bryson offer a revolutionary approach to child rearing with twelve key strategies that foster healthy brain development, leading to calmer, happier children. The authors explain—and make accessible—the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures. The “upstairs brain,” which makes decisions and balances emotions, is under construction until the mid-twenties. And especially in young children, the right brain and its emotions tend to rule over the logic of the left brain. No wonder kids throw tantrums, fight, or sulk in silence. By applying these discoveries to everyday parenting, you can turn any outburst, argument, or fear into a chance to integrate your child’s brain and foster vital growth.

Complete with age-appropriate strategies for dealing with day-to-day struggles and illustrations that will help you explain these concepts to your child, The Whole-Brain Child shows you how to cultivate healthy emotional and intellectual development so that your children can lead balanced, meaningful, and connected lives.

“[A] useful child-rearing resource for the entire family . . . The authors include a fair amount of brain science, but they present it for both adult and child audiences.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Strategies for getting a youngster to chill out [with] compassion.”—The Washington Post

“This erudite, tender, and funny book is filled with fresh ideas based on the latest neuroscience research. I urge all parents who want kind, happy, and emotionally healthy kids to read The Whole-Brain Child. This is my new baby gift.”—Mary Pipher, Ph.D., author of Reviving Ophelia and The Shelter of Each Other

“Gives parents and teachers ideas to get all parts of a healthy child’s brain working together.”—Parent to Parent

I have read SO many parenting books, and although ... I have read SO many parenting books, and although the strategies in this book are not anything new (e.g. distraction and redirection when child is having a tantrum) the science behind it all was insightful. Picturing the brain as "upstairs and downstairs" was really helpful (ie the upstairs is the prefrontal cortex that has to be accessed in order for kids to manage their emotions). Already the strategies have helped with my kids ages 3, 5, and 7. A must-read for all parents!... thought i’d write a review since it could be useful for other parents I am still reading the book however I thought i’d write a review since it could be useful for other parents. The book is very easy to read and understand a concepts, I love that it gives real life examples and solutions on how to approach your kids, as a parent of 3 I could relate to quite a few stories in the book. I am happy with the purchase and can’t wait to finish the book and apply the concepts in real life. This is Snake Oil This book is part of the "Brain Balance" predatory pop neuroscience being marketed to overwhelmed parents of challenging children. It was recommended by a child behavioral psychologist who told me she recommends it to all parents, and I'm disappointed that she thinks this book could ever be helpful. I hoped that, after the introduction, there would be practical advice that worked, even if the fake science used to describe it was bunk. Unfortunately not the case. If you wade through the (uncited) fake science, the unprofessional, awkward cartoon illustrations, and the little vignettes of parenting challenges (which are described but unsresolved), you get . . . nothing. This is a slick package without a product inside.I'm also a desperate parent, looking for a lifeline. There's no lifeline here; just lies: page after page of line drawings showing hands and houses to illustrate the crock ideas of "upstairs and downstairs brains" and "left brains and right brains." It's fine to discuss and classify human behaviors and interests using the left/right concept as a metaphor, but don't sell us a miracle cure for a problem that isn't real. Brain "de-integration" is not the cause of challenging childhood behaviors, and while it's nice to think that we could buy a book that fixes our children's brains, it's not that easy. You want the entirety of the book's advice?-When your kid is on the verge of a tantrum, don't try to shut them down with a rational explanation of why they shouldn't be throwing a tantrum. Let them have their feelings, and work from thereThat's it. The entire book. More helpful books that start with that tidbit and give evidence-based advice are Ross Greene's "The Explosive Child," Jim and Charles Fay's "Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood," and Alan E. Kazdin's "The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child." None of which have worked a miracle in my child's behavior, but they have each, in their own way, helped me to adjust my parenting and lower my stress level as we progress through our new normal. "The Whole-Brain Child" is marketed to the same audience, but has nothing to offer.
