(String). The Wohlfahrt Op. 45 Studies are a mainstay of violin study. Book 1 (50256580) and Book 2 (50256590) are bestsellers in the Schirmer Library. The entire set, Books 1 and 2 combined, is available in this new complete publication.

Great book, not for beginners I have been playing the piano for over 20 years and recently decided to give the violin a try. I can tell the exercises are great, HOWEVER, these are not for pure beginners. There are a lot of basics you need to cover just for the sake of muscle memory training (if for nothing else - the theory behind it is not difficult it just takes practice). I'm keeping it because some day I hope to be at this level just not now.and this one is my favorite by far I’m an adult just getting back into studying violin. I’m somewhere between beginner and intermediate. I’ve purchased several study books, and this one is my favorite by far. The studies are so much fun to play, and I’m looking forward to the adventure of progressing through this book.A superb resource for the self taught fiddler. These exercises have helped me improve my technique more than any others that I've used. These really are etudes, i.e. little pieces of actual music that concentrate on bits of technique. Playing music versus scales demands more from the bow arm, so one ends up working through the technique in a manner conducive to actually applying the technique musically.

The Mosquito Pdf

ISBN: B07QQLX11D
Title: The Mosquito Pdf A Human History of Our Deadliest Predator
**The instant New York Times bestseller**
*An international bestseller*

“Hugely impressive, a major work.”—NPR

A pioneering and groundbreaking work of narrative nonfiction that offers a dramatic new perspective on the history of humankind, showing how through millennia, the mosquito has been the single most powerful force in determining humanity’s fate.

Why was gin and tonic the cocktail of choice for British colonists in India and Africa? What does Starbucks have to thank for its global domination? What has protected the lives of popes for millennia? Why did Scotland surrender its sovereignty to England? What was George Washington's secret weapon during the American Revolution?

The answer to all these questions, and many more, is the mosquito.

Across our planet since the dawn of humankind, this nefarious pest, roughly the size and weight of a grape seed, has been at the frontlines of history as the grim reaper, the harvester of human populations, and the ultimate agent of historical change. As the mosquito transformed the landscapes of civilization, humans were unwittingly required to respond to its piercing impact and universal projection of power.

The mosquito has determined the fates of empires and nations, razed and crippled economies, and decided the outcome of pivotal wars, killing nearly half of humanity along the way. She (only females bite) has dispatched an estimated 52 billion people from a total of 108 billion throughout our relatively brief existence. As the greatest purveyor of extermination we have ever known, she has played a greater role in shaping our human story than any other living thing with which we share our global village.

Imagine for a moment a world without deadly mosquitoes, or any mosquitoes, for that matter? Our history and the world we know, or think we know, would be completely unrecognizable.

Driven by surprising insights and fast-paced storytelling, The Mosquito is the extraordinary untold story of the mosquito’s reign through human history and her indelible impact on our modern world order.

The Mosquito’s Guide to Western Civilization The Mosquito, while beginning and ending on interesting notes, is too much of a simplified retelling of the history of Western civilization to be worth reading. The first chapter explains the mechanism and evolutionary history of mosquito borne viruses while the last chapter describes both the private and public efforts to eradicate such diseases. In between, there is a litany of descriptions of the great wars of the Western world with the repeated refrain that the winning side was aided by General Mosquito. We hear about the Peloponnesian war, the Punic conflicts, the Crusades, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the World Wars, the war in Vietnam...all of this seemingly oblivious to the fact that history does not proceed towards modern America as its apex. Even more, the fact that wars are only a part of human history is similarly ignored. If the author could have simply stuck to describing the effect of mosquitos in these conflicts it would have been a much shorter book. Instead, he retells all of this from a mile high perspective. It’s not so much that he gets things wrong as that it’s impossible to do justice to three thousand years of history in a book ostensibly devoted to another topic. What could have been a genuinely fascinating look into the effect of mosquitos on human history turns into a history of Western conflicts. Not recommended unless you are a devotee of military history.Largely already done This book is a summary of other books and offers very little that is new. By summary, I mean the conclusions of other historians are cited though the path they took to get to those conclusions - the research and field studies - is largely glossed over. The author acknowledges these "brilliant accounts" continuously throughout his own book leading one to wonder why this book was written. The author also has a tendency to go off on tangents (he really dislikes Disney's treatment of Pocahontas, for example) and too often tries to touch base on current culture. For those having an interest on the role of mosquito-conveyed illnesses on human history, I think the work of Webb, Packard, and, to a lesser extent, Diamond cover the ground and often cover ground he tends to neglect, such as areas of the world at times when Europeans were not involved, such as the role of the mosquito during the unification and rise of China. On the other hand, for readers interested in going into depth and more thoroughly encountering the history and science involved in this subject, then this book supplies a good overview and a comprehensive reference list.Entertaining, Historical & Frightening Loved it. Hope to read more from this author.

I Don't Want to Talk About It Free Pdf

Title: I Don't Want to Talk About It Pdf Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression
Author: Terrence Real
Published Date: 1998-03-02
Page: 383

When Terrence Real was studying to be a therapist, he accepted the notion that women suffered depression at rates several times that of men. Now he believes that conventional wisdom is wrong, that there has been a great cultural cover-up of depression in men. Real is convinced of the existence of a mental illness that is passed from fathers to sons in the form of rage, workaholism, distanced relationships from loved ones, and self-destructive behaviors ranging from stupid choices at work and in love to drug and alcohol abuse. Men reading I Don't Want to Talk About It will probably recognize themselves in every chapter, while women will recognize their partners--and, of course, both sexes will see their fathers in a new light. Richard Higgins The Boston Globe An important book about men and depression that is uplifting...Men will recognize the other men found here: laconic bullet-biters, 'rage-aholics,' emotional runaways, and badly fathered sons turned into disconnected dads who spill their emotional truths onto the page.Michael Kimmel San Francisco Chronicle Book Review Extraordinary...brings to light a hidden history of male depression...A powerful book.Pamela Warrick Los Angeles Times The most provocative in a flood of new books on depression...The only volume that speaks exclusively to and about depressed men.

A revolutionary and hopeful look at depression as a silent epidemic in men that manifests as workaholism, alcoholism, rage, difficulty with intimacy, and abusive behavior by the cofounder of Harvard’s Gender Research Project.

Twenty years of experience treating men and their families has convinced psychotherapist Terrence Real that depression is a silent epidemic in men—that men hide their condition from family, friends, and themselves to avoid the stigma of depression’s “un-manliness.” Problems that we think of as typically male—difficulty with intimacy, workaholism, alcoholism, abusive behavior, and rage—are really attempts to escape depression. And these escape attempts only hurt the people men love and pass their condition on to their children.

This groundbreaking book is the “pathway out of darkness” that these men and their families seek. Real reveals how men can unearth their pain, heal themselves, restore relationships, and break the legacy of abuse. He mixes penetrating analysis with compelling tales of his patients and even his own experiences with depression as the son of a violent, depressed father and the father of two young sons.

High Recommendations This is a very good book if you wish to understand your male depression and the things you do to deal with it. It has answered many questions for me and shed new light on why I feel the way I do and do the things I do. Although it is written specifically for men (according to the author, more men are prone to depression as adults because men inevitably encounter major trauma during childhood which they do not deal with because they are taught not to talk about it, not to cry, and to be "strong.") But, this book can be applied to anyone who has not dealt with childhood trauma for whatever reason...male or female. I recommend this book for woman, because it will help you to understand your husband or boyfriend and actually be able to help him understand himself and recover. Who knows...it may also help you to understand yourself.A must read I am currently reading this book and I wish I had read it years ago. This is a MUST READ for men or women that are married to men that they suspect might have struggles with depression, anger, addiction etc. This is a life changer for me. If you really love someone, you help them face their issues; you don't enable. If you are even considering this book, you probably really need it. I wish I had heard of it years earlier. Was your childhood family messed up? In terms of understanding covert depression, Terry is spot on. For any men raised in a difficult home this book is a treasure map for finding the reward of healing. Terry is a tad political and ventures down some paths, a little too far, to make a point but his insight and diagnosis are on point. If western medicine is on top of the male depression issue than why do men exceed women in suicide nearly 4 to 1? Why are there so many psychotic meds available from your doctor? I'd suggest there are many misdiagnosed men who need to address prior trauma and don't have a clue about it.I've suggested this book to many men and especially any counselor or pastor who works with men.

Dweck, Ph.D., is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading researchers in the fields of personality, social psychology, and developmental psychology. She is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, and has won nine lifetime achievement awards for her research. She addressed the United Nations on the eve of their new global development plan and has advised governments on educational and economic policies. Her work has been featured in almost every major national publication, and she has appeared on Today, Good Morning America, and 20/20. She lives with her husband in Palo Alto, California. From the Hardcover edition.

This updated edition of the book that has changed millions of lives with its insights into the growth mindset can help you start the new year off right.

After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. People with a fixed mindset—those who believe that abilities are fixed—are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset—those who believe that abilities can be developed. Mindset reveals how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment.

In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset. She also expands the mindset concept beyond the individual, applying it to the cultures of groups and organizations. With the right mindset, you can motivate those you lead, teach, and love—to transform their lives and your own.

Praise for Mindset

Rather terrible This was the book that completely turned me off from the psychology/self-help genre. It lacked depth and felt like an endless repetition of comparing situations in which one person had the "proper" mindset and another had the "wrong" mindset, followed by a few condescending, didactic paragraphs on why the proper mindset was necessary in leading the former to success; it's apparently the key to everything. Very little was mentioned on *how* to actually achieve this mindset. On the bright side, I've now become more tolerant towards other not-so-great books. It'd be pretty hard to get any worse than this one.some chose easy ones, which ensured they succeeded Knowing can change a belief, and changing a belief can change behaviour. Changing behaviour can change your career trajectory. Stanford professor of psychology, Carol Dweck has a view of human development that may well lead to behaviour change and a career boost.Dweck’s insight has its origin in a curious behaviour she noticed in children. When given puzzles, some chose easy ones, which ensured they succeeded. Others chose to do difficult ones, which meant they had a good chance of failing. “Not only weren’t they discouraged by failure, they didn’t even think they were failing. They thought they were learning.”From this she concluded that people possess two fundamental mindsets – a “fixed” mindset and a “growth” mindset. The fixed mindset believes that one’s abilities are a fact of birth and are unchangeable. Just as you are born with a certain eye-colour, so you are born with a certain brain strength. Your IQ is fixed and can be seen from your grade one IQ score. From then on, you are locked into an ability set. There are some who through sheer hard work can overcome their minimal ability, while others achieve as much with no effort. Having to work hard to achieve is a sign of limited ability. Not only is this understanding incorrect, Prof Dweck explains, but the consequences of this fixed view of ability is the root cause of many problems in learning, relationships and career.Alfred Binet designed his IQ test in the early 20th century. His purpose was to identify children who were not profiting from the Paris public schools, so that new educational programmes could be developed to assist them. Far from believing one’s IQ was fixed, he believed that education and practice could make profound changes to intelligence. His view that intelligence can be grown has been bolstered by the work of neuroscientists such as Gilbert Gottlieb, who has shown that not only “do genes and environment cooperate as we develop, but genes require input from the environment to work properly.”Robert Sternberg, the present-day guru of intelligence, holds that the primary factor in whether people achieve expertise “is not some fixed prior ability, but purposeful engagement.” In fact, scientists are learning that people have more capacity for lifelong learning and brain development than was ever thought. What does all this imply?Believing that your qualities are carved in stone - Dweck’s “fixed” mindset - leaves people with the all-consuming goal of proving themselves in the classroom, and in their careers. If a person was told they were smart in primary school, they tend to spend the rest of their lives trying to convince themselves and others of this. If they were told they were not smart, they are either condemned to mediocrity or to hiding their limitations. The “growth” mindset is based on the well-proven fact that one’s basic qualities are cultivated through effort. Everyone changes and grows through application and experience. Can anyone with proper motivation or education can become Einstein or Beethoven? No, but the growth mindset believes that a person’s true potential is unknown and unknowable. Darwin and Tolstoy were considered ordinary as children. Golfing great, Ben Hogan, was completely uncoordinated and graceless as a child. Geraldine Page, eight-time Academy Award nominee and Best actress Oscar winner was advised to give up acting for lack of talent. Ditto for Jackson Pollock, Marcel Proust, and Ray Charles. The erroneous fixed mindset view holds that if at first you don’t succeed, you probably don’t have the ability. If Rome wasn’t built in a day, maybe it wasn’t meant to be.What are the career implications of this fixed and growth mindset? In the brain-wave lab at Columbia, students with a fixed mindset paid close attention only to whether their answers were right or wrong. When they were presented with information that could help them learn, there was no sign of interest as indicated from brain-wave activity. When they were shown that their answers were wrong, they were not interested in learning what the right answer was.In the world of work the fixed mindset “intelligent” to spend most of their efforts showing they are special and entitled. Having to make an effort and learn is for those who are “less intelligent.”This leads to the what Dweck calls the “CEO disease.” Rather than confronting their shortcomings these CEOs create a world where they have none. They surround themselves with worshippers, and exile critics. Some choose short-term strategies that boost the company’s fortunes, and make themselves look like heroes, rather than working for long-term improvement and risking disapproval, as they lay the foundation for the health and growth of the company in the future.Lou Gerstner, a growth mindsetter, was brought in to turn IBM around. As he worked on the enormous task of overhauling IBM, its share price was stagnant and Wall Street disappointed. Gerstner was called a failure. A few years later, however, IBM was leading its industry again.Darwin Smith, reflecting on his extraordinary performance at Kimberly-Clark, said that he had “never stopped trying to be qualified for the job.”When NASA solicits applications for astronauts, they reject people with unblemished records of success, and instead select people who have had significant failures, and bounced back.Jack Welch, the celebrated CEO of General Electric, chose executives on the basis of “runway,” their capacity for growth. If you are ‘special’ when you are successful, what are you when you’re unsuccessful? In the fixed mindset, the loss of one’s self-esteem to failure can be a permanent, haunting trauma. Even with a growth mindset, failure is a painful experience, but it does not define the person. It’s a problem to be faced, dealt with, and learned from.Dweck reports a study of seventh-graders’ responses to academic failure. Those with a growth mindset, (no surprise,) said they would study harder for the next test. Those with the fixed mindset said they would study less for the next test. If you don’t have the ability, why waste your time?A study of university students showed that the more depressed those with a growth mindset felt, the more they took action to confront their problems. They made sure to keep up with their studies, and keep up with their lives. The worse they felt, the more determined they became!People with the growth mindset intuitively believe that even geniuses have to work hard for their achievements. Which is factually true.Mindsets are not a permanent part of one’s personality, but they are an important part and one that can be changed.“Just by knowing about the two mindsets, you can start thinking and reacting in new ways. People tell me they start to catch themselves when they are in the throes of the fixed mindset—passing up a chance for learning, feeling labelled by a failure, or getting discouraged when something requires a lot of effort. And then they switch themselves into the growth mindset—making sure they take the challenge, learn from the failure, or continue their effort,” Dweck explains.A very important insight.Readability Light --+-- SeriousInsights High -+--- LowPractical High ----+ LowIan Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategyInteresting theory, yet lacking depth I first came across the author in a TED video. Her talk about how "not yet" generates far more power than "fail" was interesting and I decided to buy her book to further read into her studies. The book in general is an interesting piece of work. I like the way she describes the "growth mindset". However, most of the book seems to focus on discussing the difference between "fixed mindset" and "growth mindset" applied to different fields. So it does get very predictable and tedious. There is far not enough discussion about how to better develop the "growth mindset". It is like the author uses the entire book to emphasize how important "growth mindset" is but doesn't really offer much help. In particular, I don't like how she attributes every corporate failure to "fixed mindset". I think it is way too generalizing and over-simplifying.

At the Grave of the Unknown Fisherman Pdf

ISBN: B07M6ZTGXF
Title: At the Grave of the Unknown Fisherman Pdf

Brilliant, witty, perceptive essays about fly-fishing, the natural world, and life in general by the acknowledged master of fishing writers.

Proving that fishing is not just a part-time pursuit, At the Grave of the Unknown Fisherman takes us through a year with America's favorite fishing scribe, John Gierach, who dedicates himself to his passion despite his belief that "In the long run, fishing usually amounts to a lifetime of pratfalls punctuated by rare moments of perfection."

Beginning with an early spring expedition to barely thawed Wyoming waters and ending with a New Year's Eve trip to the Frying Pan River in Colorado, Gierach's travels find him fishing for trout, carp, and grayling; considering the pros and cons of learning fishing from videos ("video fishing seems a little like movie sex: fun to watch, but a long way from the real thing"); pondering the ethics of sharing secret spots; and debunking the myth of the unflappable outdoorsman ("masters of stillness on the outside, festering s***holes of uncertainty just under the surface").

With an appreciation of the highs, the lows, and all points between, Gierach writes about the fishing life with wisdom, grace, and the well-timed wisecrack. As he says, "The season never does officially end here, but it ends effectively, which means you can fish if you want to and if you can stand it, but you don't have to." As any Gierach fan knows, want to and have to are never very far apart.

Grumpy Old Man Gierach, Not So Much!!!! The writer is getting long in the tooth, but he is getting better with age. This book contains a number of episodes from one season's fishing with the author. It also contains a number of insights into how to live life, as well as, how we live a life matters. You do not get a great wealth of information into how to be a better fisherman, but rather how to do it with greater style. As always, this is a great book, well written and entertaining. It is not as whinny as others in his franchise, which is great. Get it and enjoy.John continues a strong streak Mr. Gierach has published another fine compilation of his marvelous short stories. The craft of writing is never easy and crafting short stories is far more difficult than blathering on for page after page in a mighty tome.I could easily read this in an hour or two, but I'm reading these stories one-at-a-time because I want to enjoy each new story in its own space. I guess I'm savoring this book as if it was some fine wine or a great pastry...you simply don't gulp it down. Thanks again for your fine writing, Mr. Gierach. The art of writing short fly fishing stories is a difficult one to master and Mr. Prosek, Mr. Leeson, Ms. Proulx, Mr. Luce, Mr. Babb, Mr. Proper, Mr. McGuane and Nick and Mari Lyons have all made the grade. I won't try to rank any of these fine contemporary authors (though Mr. Prosek's watercolors and Mari Lyons' illustrations (not all watercolors) add a fine edge to the text in their works).Mr. McGuane notes on the slipcover that Mr. Gierach out fished him the last time they were on the stream together and that he would have been willing to give Mr. Gierach faint praise (if only to even the score), but Mr. McGuane - an honest fisherman (apologies to Sparse) - correctly rates the quality of this fine work (who would put a bad review on the slipcover, anyway?).I own all of Mr. Gierach's works and this is one of his best. Literate, humorous, and a nice guide for those of us who are a bit younger . . .we can see how a little more living helps hone an individual's perception of the important things in life.At the Grave of the Unknown Fisherman Another delightful and easy read from Gierach. This is a collection of short stories about fly fishing and its related insanities. At the Grave has more character development than many of Gierach's other books. It was great to get to know this crazy assemblage of people who previously had been mentioned by name only.
