Title: The Tipping Point Pdf How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

Featuring a new afterword.

Why did crime in New York drop in the mid-90s? Why is teenage smoking out of control? Why are television shows like Sesame Street good at teaching kids how to read?

In The Tipping Point, New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell looks at why major changes in society happen suddenly and unexpectedly. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a few fare-beaters and graffiti artists fuel a subway crime wave, or a satisfied customer fill the empty tables of a new restaurant. These are social epidemics, and the moment when they take off, when they reach their critical mass, is the Tipping Point.

Gladwell uncovers the personality types who are natural pollinators of new ideas and trends. He analyzes fashion trends, smoking, children's television, direct mail and the early days of the American Revolution for clues about making ideas infectious.

The Tipping Point is an intellectual adventure story with an infectious enthusiasm for the power and joy of new ideas. Most of all, it is a road map to change, with a profoundly hopeful message: that one imaginative person applying a well-placed lever can move the world.

quick dip into social science research Some may say “The Tipping Point” belabors the obvious, which is that things change, sometimes overnight. True, too true, but so what? Malcolm Gladwell, the master of popularized social research, makes us care about the mechanisms of seemingly abrupt shifts in the course of human events—such as why William Dawes’ midnight ride to warn that the British were coming didn’t start the American Revolution, but Paul Revere’s did. Turns out Revere’s personality helped his news galvanize patriots to pick up their rifles, while Dawes’ identical cry made people turn over and go back to sleep. Revere had two of the three traits Gladwell identifies as necessary to the spread of social trends: he was a Connector and a Maven. Revere had a vast rolodex of acquaintances in colonial Massachusetts and he knew everything there was to know about the nascent independence movement. He set the scene for resistance to the onmarching British, and a few local men of Gladwell’s third type, the Persuaders, finished the job of rallying the militias of Concord and Lexington. Gladwell is adept at explaining the academic research that led to such popular ideas as “six degrees of separation” and relating such social science experimentation to his overall theme of how change happens. He goes deeply into the discoveries about learning that led to the success of “Sesame Street” and “Blue’s Clues”—these shows’ producers used the idea of “stickiness” to instill basic principles and values in pre-schoolers. The “broken windows” theory of policing gets a thorough explainer, including a side trip into how do-gooding seminarians can allow themselves to avoid being good Samaritans. Advertising is one of the great accelerators of trends, and Gladwell marshals a few Madison Ave. case studies to show how commercials tip us into parting with our hard-earned cash. Absolutely painless learning is what Gladwell offers, with a side benefit of greater self-awareness.How things were before the Internet became the major factor As Usual, Malcolm Gladwell is a great story teller. The book is about the small things that can make huge changes. The book is interesting and fun to read, but there are two big problems:a) Malcolm Gladwell is not a scientist, and he lacks the skepticism which is so mauch an important part of science. He starts with the story of the crime fall in NY that came shortly after the start of the "broken windows" policy. The "fact" that the "broken windows"policy made such a huge change serves him well for his arguments, but there is a problem here. the claim that the "broken windows" policy was the main factor in reducing the crime at that time in NY, is an assumption, and by now we have strong reasons to believe that it played only a mior role in the crime reduction. Other factors such as reduction of lead in fuel have much stronger correlation with the crime reduction, and in many other places, as well, while efforts to replicate the "broken windows" policy elsewhere did not produce the same results. So his first chapter is about a nice but false story that if it was true, was showing an interesting nature of how vast changes in behavior happen. The second problem, is that the book was written before that Internet became a major player in the field. By now it is problably the most major player, but the book describes how things were before the Internet became a major player. In this sense, the book describes how things were in another era. Things have completely changed since then.

Great book with excellent recipes! Love how well this book was laid out! Too often we wonder how long a recipie may take, but the author took the guess work out of it. In the beginning, the author explains why the DASH and Mediterranean diet work while giving a very helpful coding system for each recipe. The coding system let's you know if it is dairy free, one pot, family friendly, etc. The ease and use of this book is wonderful for someone who has a family to look after, while looking for nutritious meals for the family that are easy to make. I also found this cookbook easy for people who may have restricted diets and need to alter recipies. I really liked the flavor and ease of this cookbook as well. I personally liked each meal I have cooked so far, and find it refreshing to have a nice laid out recipie with easy directions to help inspire tasty meals for the family. I recieved this book free from the publisher and am very happy to had the opportunity to try some great new recipes out that looked and tasted amazing!Great With A Minor Caveat At 55, I've discovered the two best, most effective lifestyles for me personally are KETO and PRIMAL. Good, full fat dairy and meat along with lots of vegetables and a moderate amount of nuts and seeds works wonders for my middle aged figure. I'm 5'1" and 115. 80% of your body composition is determined by what you eat.All that to say, I've been interested in mainly the Mediterranean diet, not so much the Dash. I was fortunate the publisher allowed me a review copy. This cookbook has wonderful, simple recipes and lots of extras like measurement conversion charts, and easy helpful tips. It's so nice to eat whole, real food. I have to modify many recipes, as I don't eat grains nor legumes. And I am a full fat dairy gal... not the low/no fat garbage. That is the only reason for 4 stars. But all in all, the recipes are delicious. I would definitely recommend it.

" Superb, enthralling and necessarily terrifying . . . the accident unfurls with a horrible inevitability. Mr. Higginbotham has captured the terrible drama.” —The Wall Street Journal"Midnight in Chernobyl is top-notch historical narrative: a tense, fast-paced, engrossing, and revelatory product of more than a decade of research. . . . A stunningly detailed account . . . For all its wealth of information, the work never becomes overwhelming or difficult to follow. Higginbotham’s handling of the sociopolitical context is also deft." —Nature“In chilling detail, this book recounts the many missteps of their response to the disaster. . . . Higginbotham compellingly suggests that these flaws all but predicted the calamity—and, in turn, the collapse of the Soviet Union itself.” —The New Yorker"In fascinating detail, Higginbotham chronicles how the drama played out, showing that Soviet hubris in part led to the accident and Soviet secrecy compounded it." —Newsday"Midnight in Chernobyl is wonderful and chilling. . . . Adam Higginbotham tells the story of the disaster and its gruesome aftermath with thriller-like flair. . . . It is a tale of hubris and doomed ambition, featuring Communist party bosses and hapless engineers, victims and villains, confusion and cover-up." —The Guardian"A riveting, deeply reported reconstruction . . . In this powerful work of reportage, Chernobyl and its aftermath emerge as the Soviet Union’s last stand, containing all the pathologies and passion of that social experiment now lost to history." —The Los Angeles Times Adam Higginbotham writes for The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Wired, GQ, and Smithsonian. The author of Midnight in Chernobyl, he lives in New York City.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Journalist Adam Higginbotham’s definitive, years-in-the-making account of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster—and a powerful investigation into how propaganda, secrecy, and myth have obscured the true story of one of the twentieth century’s greatest disasters.

Early in the morning of April 26, 1986, Reactor Number Four of the Chernobyl Atomic Energy Station exploded, triggering history’s worst nuclear disaster. In the thirty years since then, Chernobyl has become lodged in the collective nightmares of the world: shorthand for the spectral horrors of radiation poisoning, for a dangerous technology slipping its leash, for ecological fragility, and for what can happen when a dishonest and careless state endangers its citizens and the entire world. But the real story of the accident, clouded from the beginning by secrecy, propaganda, and misinformation, has long remained in dispute.

Drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews conducted over the course of more than ten years, as well as letters, unpublished memoirs, and documents from recently-declassified archives, Adam Higginbotham has written a harrowing and compelling narrative which brings the disaster to life through the eyes of the men and women who witnessed it firsthand. The result is a masterful nonfiction thriller, and the definitive account of an event that changed history: a story that is more complex, more human, and more terrifying than the Soviet myth.

Midnight in Chernobyl is an indelible portrait of one of the great disasters of the twentieth century, of human resilience and ingenuity, and the lessons learned when mankind seeks to bend the natural world to his will—lessons which, in the face of climate change and other threats, remain not just vital but necessary.

AN UNCOMFORTABLE REMINDER THAT'S BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN Journalist Adam Higginbotham has written what has been described as “a blinding work of narrative fact” that will “amaze, enthrall, and cause every reader to shed tears” for the legacy left behind by a nuclear disaster in “Midnight in Chernobyl.” That’s a flowery review but totally appropriate. The author brilliantly details the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident that started out to be a safety check intended to simulate a blackout power-failure. Through a combination of reactor design flaws and operators not complying with a test checklist, uncontrolled nuclear reactions caused several steam explosions and an open-air graphite fire. Airborne plumes of radioactive fission products were distributed into parts of the USSR and other European countries for many days. Two deaths occurred at the facility during the accident, 28 firefighters and other employees died of acute radiation sickness shortly afterward, and fourteen cancer deaths of 134 hospitalized survivors followed in the next ten years. It is estimated that, over the long term, several thousand additional cancer deaths will be attributed to the incident’s byproducts. Billions of dollars will be expended to mitigate the damage that has occurred, both to humans and the environment.Secrecy and falsehoods by the USSR are evident throughout the account. It is also apparent that accidents at nuclear plants occur frequently, most of which are relatively innocuous considering the potential. Because nations will never want to admit being the cause of any worldwide disaster, secrecy will probably continue to accompany nuclear mishaps by any government, a scary thought.Higginbottham’s research is immaculate, his comments and conclusions are well founded, and his writing is impeccable. The author has skillfully avoided fustian sentimentality, the scourge of investigative reporting, but still presents crackling prose that was a magnetic attraction for this reader. The official Politburo verdict blames the disaster on gross breaches of regulations by operators whose “irresponsibility, negligence, and indiscipline led to grave consequences.” The report lists the ministers who were dismissed and/or expelled from the Communist Party and states that court proceedings will follow. However, the author goes on to reveal that there’s much more to the incident.Higginbotham has uncovered the reality of the nightmare of nuclear disaster and makes it obvious that more tragedies might be expected. The potential is so real that every proposal for dangerous enterprises, regardless of purpose or stated invulnerability, must be carefully vetted and reviewed by knowledgeable and unbiased sources. A thoughtful study of “Midnight in Chernobyl” is certainly a prudent exercise in gaining such awareness.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALESThe official guide proceeded to give this UN group a speech about the wonderful safety history of Soviet nuclear power Author Adam Higginbotham has done a masterful job of blowing the lid off of the sarcophagus of obfuscation under which the Soviet Union attempted to bury the truths about what happened at Chernobyl in April of 1986. He dug deep into archives, personal papers, professional journals, and hundreds of hours of interviews to piece together the puzzle of the events that led up to the explosion that destroyed Reactor Number Four at Chernobyl. The author offers, as well, background into the flaws in the design of the RBMK graphite-moderated boiler water reactor. He examines the corrupt and labyrinthine system of managing nuclear power in the USSR. While this is a superb work of journalism, it also holds the intrigue of a murder mystery. Who really was responsible? What really happened? Was it design error or operator error? The author makes this a very enlightening journey inside the minds of Soviet and Ukrainian leaders and scientists, as well as inside the broken lives of the workers who operated the plant and lived in nearby Pripyat.Mr. Higginbotham makes a credible case for the fact that the Chernobyl disaster and its lingering aftershocks were the catalysts that led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Glasnost and Perestroika were not able to overcome the inertia of a Soviet machine that did not know how to tell the truth to its people or to the world at large. That lack of candor became as toxic for the Soviet state as the radioactive debris from Chernobyl became for those in the path of the fallout.I had a very personal;interest in this story. In 1992, I was part of a UN group that toured the Chernobyl complex, the village of Pripyat, and several hospitals in Kiev that were treating hundreds of victims of chronic radiation poisoning. Many of them were suffering from leukemia, thyroid cancer, and a host of other diseases. When we arrived at Chernobyl, we were taken to a visitors' center where we were show a 1:6 scale model of the Chernobyl complex. The official guide proceeded to give this UN group a speech about the wonderful safety history of Soviet nuclear power. "Of course, there was this one small incident that the world tries to blow out of proportion," At that time, one of the remaining reactors was still functioning, ,and we were taken to the control room, mere yards from the notorious sarcophagus that had been built to bury the debris of the core of Reactor Number Four. The engineers operating the plant were smoking, and ashes from their cigarettes fell onto the dials of the instruments that told them the status of the reactor and the turbines. It was clear that not many safety lessons had been learned from the worst nuclear accident in history. This is a story with many villains and some remarkable heroes. Add to the list of heroes Mr. Higginbotham, whose yeoman work in uncovering facts and truths about Chernobyl will help the world to make more informed choices about the future of nuclear energy. This is a book that should be read by anyone with an interest in energy, the history of the Soviet Union, and the forces that shape history.Enjoy!

Running with Sherman Free Pdf

ISBN: 1524732362
Title: Running with Sherman Pdf The Donkey with the Heart of a Hero
Author: Christopher McDougall
Published Date: 2019
Page: 352

An Amazon Best Book of October 2019: Readers—and runners—will recognize Christopher McDougall’s name as the author of the best-seller Born to Run, and his latest, Running with Sherman, is part animal love story, part adventure book, part feminist running manifesto, and part scientific exploration into healing. What it lacks in the cutting edge scientific research that helped make Born to Run a hit, it makes up for with heart and…fuzzy animals. Journalist McDougall lives on a farm in Amish Country (PA), and one day his neighbor alerts him to a donkey that has been neglected by its hoarder owner. McDougall adopts the donkey—Sherman—sight unseen and receives a traumatized, unhealthy animal who can barely walk due to his neglected hooves. While nursing Sherman back to health with the help of an equine expert, McDougall learns that donkeys thrive from having a job, and he remembers that ambitious athletes like himself race burros once a year in Colorado. Thus kicks off McDougall and Sherman’s training for the aforementioned annual burro race. Along the way they pick up a wacky cast of characters: two additional donkey running pals; a young man recovering from depression and a suicide attempt; McDougall’s incredibly patient, former hula-dancer wife turned trail runner and donkey whisperer; an Amish running club; two women who drive McDougall and donkeys across the country…you get the idea. McDougall is a fantastic storyteller and a witty writer: “The Amish have a better retention rate than Netflix: roughly 90 percent of young Amish adults choose to stick with the faith and join the church for life.” A fascinating and inspiring hybrid nonfiction salve to the problems of our day, Running with Sherman achieves the running equivalent of a hole-in-one. --Sarah Gelman, Amazon Book Review Christopher McDougall covered wars in Rwanda and Angola as a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press before writing his best-selling book Born to Run. His fascination with the limits of human potential led him to create the Outside magazine web series, "Art of the Hero." He currently lives with his wife, two daughters, and a farmyard menagerie in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

"A delight, full of heart and hijinks and humor . . . McDougall is a gifted storyteller who gets to the heart of the human-animal connection." --John Grogan, author of Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog

From the best-selling author of Born to Run, a heartwarming story about training a rescue donkey to run one of the most challenging races in America.

When Chris McDougall agreed to take in a donkey from an animal hoarder, he thought it would be no harder than the rest of the adjustments he and his family had made after moving from Philadelphia to the heart of Pennsylvania Amish country. But when he arrived, Sherman was in such bad shape he could barely move, and his hair was coming out in clumps. Chris decided to undertake a radical rehabilitation program designed not only to heal Sherman's body but to heal his mind as well. It turns out the best way to soothe a donkey is to give it a job, and so Chris decided to teach Sherman how to run. He'd heard about burro racing--a unique type of race where humans and donkeys run together in a call-back to mining days--and decided he and Sherman would enter the World Championship in Colorado.

Easier said than done. In the course of Sherman's training, Chris would have to recruit several other runners, both human and equine, and call upon the wisdom of burro racers, goat farmers, Amish running club members, and a group of irrepressible female long-haul truckers. Along the way, he shows us the life-changing power of animals, nature, and community.

A feel-good book, especially for animal and sports lovers There's nothing not to like about this heart-warming book. The author is a former journalist who knows how to keep his sentences from rambling and his focus on point. He's a dedicated runner, as his two previous books attest. I am NOT a runner, nor an athlete of any kind, but I enjoyed all the interesting encounters with those who are, the stories of sports I'd never heard of before. Tied to his passion for running is his passion for animals, and that's where I tumbled into the book. Sherman, whose winsome portrait adorns the cover, was a rescue donkey. When the author saw in what dreadful shape the poor creature was, he left no option unexplored in his search to bring Sherman back into health and happiness. This book is a wonderful journey through their mutual encounters with people, places, and projects, until success is achieved and Sherman becomes what he was always meant to be. Frankly, even if you don't like animals or sports, this is so engagingly written that you'll enjoy it for itself. The first thing I did was to get the other two books by the author, because I can tell I'll enjoy them, too.Inspiration From A Man And A Donkey I loved the science in this book and have been reciting the facts to any one who will listen. I have learned so much about donkeys and people. The many photos connect you even more to their stories. There is a main story of the people who became involved to first save the donkey, Sherman's life, then to bring him out of depression then to give him a purpose, a reason to live.Spinning around the central story are many stories of Christ McDougall's life before he met Mika, his future wife, then their life together, all the friends that they made in Amish country and tales of the famous donkey race in Colorado, and humor filled stories , of people trying to recover after devastating circumstances and the quirky behavior of donkeys. This book wraps up deep into the story and before you know it, you are wondering how you can squeeze a little more time reading. I knew it would happen but I was prepared for the big disappointment that the book was finally over. I had to take a few days after reading it to contemplate all that I loved and learned before writing this reveiw.

Now in blue! This combination planner-and-journal helps readers strategize their lives and increase their performance via writing prompts, self-assessments, and calendars--all backed by science and the author's 20 years coaching the highest performers in business, athletics, entertainment, and beyond.

Now in blue! The High Performance Planner is a 2-in-1 day planner and journal based on the world's largest study of how high performers increase productivity, set goals, prioritize projects, outperform their peers, and create the positive mindset and habits needed to win the day. Through morning mindset journal prompts, daily goal boxes, evening scorecards, weekly habit assessments, monthly project planning, and proprietary whole life balance sheets, the Planner helps you think more strategically, prioritize like a pro, achieve your goals faster, and become more focused, happy, and productive.

Best of all, the Planner helps you install the personal and professional habits proven to lead to long-term success. That's what it's all about. Best-selling author Brendon Burchard says, "High performance means succeeding over the long term without compromising your health or positive relationships." This Planner helps you do that by accounting for your entire life's progress, not just your daily to-dos.

The High Performance Planner was created and field tested by Brendon Burchard, the world's leading high performance coach and a #1 New York Times best-selling author, whose books include The Motivation Manifesto, The Charge, and Life's Golden Ticket. His pioneering research with the High Performance Institute led to Amazon's Top 3 Business & Leadership Book of 2017, High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become That Way.

Deceptive The book is full page size (8.5x11) and only goes to 60 days.Dissapointing I'm not familiar with Brendan Bruchard, his books, or his methodology. Perhaps this planner is a better hit for those already familiar with this style.I had high expectations for this planner, having fallen for the enthusiastic pitch I saw in a sponsored ad. I'm managing a number of projects at the moment and was really looking forward to an efficient planner. The first problem with the book is that the first month does not have a monthly at a glance. The full months come at the end of the daily sections, so I decided to go to the end of the book and use the last calendar for the first month. There's no master projects page or even a master 3 months projects page. That's what I mostly wanted from a planner that raised my expectations so high. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to continue using a separate notebook to keep track of all of my projects. The other issue for me is that each day is two full pages - sounds great, until you realize that there's only a small space for goals/tasks. There is a huge chunk of space dedicated to a "morning mindset" series of questions and an "evening journal." I would have preferred a small space for each of these and called evening journal - "day's reflections" or something along those lines. If you're looking for a basic planner (with monthly calendars after the month) with a focus on personal development, then this is the book for you.If you are coordinating multiple projects with various timelines and communication schedules, look elsewhere. Why did you publish in China? I've followed you for years, Bendon, and invested thousands of dollars in your programs. I'm impressed with your thought leadership and charisma. My delight while thumbing through the planner was diminished when the last page revealed this was printed in China. With plenty of top-quality American publishers, did you really have to go overseas?

Sidekick Pdf

ISBN: 0999822519
Title: Sidekick Pdf A Pregnancy Field Guide for Dudes
Author: Brigham Berthold
Published Date: 2019-03
Page: 142

Brig Berthold writes because he can't sleep if he doesn't. Following a military career, he earned a degree in Journalism from Utah Valley University. He is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan and an alumni member of the Wounded Warrior Project. Brig currently lives in South Carolina with his wife and daughter where he reports being outnumbered by redheaded females.

You picked up this book because you are now— or soon will be — living with a pregnant woman. The title, “Dad”, will make you a superhero. But it’s only possible because a woman in your life goes through hell first. This book will make you a support champion. Because you, my man, are the sidekick.A sidekick knows there is more to the first trimester than ginger ale. A sidekick knows where they fit into a baby shower. Most importantly, a sidekick has a plan to get his hero’s favorite tacos in any situation.Packed with practical tips, and over 20 illustrations, this book is the perfect guide to help men thrive during pregnancy.

The best gift! This is a great gift for baby showers or any couple expecting. Brigham brings such awareness into the whole process and how to be involved and a real partner. It's a fun and humorous approach that makes the whole experience better. It's written for dudes in a way that is spot on to do the right things. No matter how many times you have gone through the experience, this will make it better for everyone!A Field Guide I Actually Enjoyed Reading I will start with being honest to the reader of this review. I've known the author of this book, Brigham, for quite some time. We spent years as roommates and friends during our time at Utah Valley University. This is going to be a biased review; however, the best critics are those who know you best. I know many sides of Brigham and I can only conclude one thing: he is a great man. This book will support anyone going through a pregnancy; man and woman alike. It's an enjoyable field guide. For those who may not have military experience, field guides are designed to break things down for you Barney style, so even the most "special" of young soldiers can understand how to get the job done. Sidekick details how to make it through the interesting, tough, and even gross times during a pregnancy. There are pictures and instructions and everything you'll need to know in order to come out on top as an amazing husband, spouse, helpmeet, friend, etc. The writing is clear and concise, with a dash of humor to make things fun while reading. It truly is an easy read, and you'll come out of it with the knowledge and tools required to declare victory over pregnancy!Whether it's your first time going through the joys of pregnancy or if you consider yourself a hardened veteran to the field, Sidekick can provide you the knowhow (or remind you of things you forgot) to be the best sidekick to the super-woman in your life. Get a copy for you and your spouse. Get a copy for your friend, brother, stressed out coworker. You will not regret it, I promise.Fantastic read. Great gift. Sidekick is a fantastic resource for first time dads. It is both funny and incredibly informative. It would make a wonderful gift for the soon to be father. It includes many entertaining graphics and illustrations.
